lithium batteries

Have you checked your lithium batteries?

With the big day just days away, we thought we’d keep this Smart Directions article short, sweet and smart. This time of year, most of the gadgets, gizmos and games being bought by consumers come with one thing. Lithium batteries. We know what you’re thinking; “So what?!”. Well…hold onto your hats!

They’re a class 9 hazardous material

That’s right, lithium batteries are considered a dangerous or hazardous material, because they have been known to ignite in transit or once disposed at landfill. According to the Environmental Services Association, “48% of all waste fires in the UK each year are caused by Lithium-ion batteries, costing £158 million annually to waste operators, fire services and the environment.”

Clearly, it’s no laughing matter. We’re talking about a very explosive situation.

Caught you smiling at that one.

Knowing that lithium batteries can pose a significant threat to safety, the environment and human life, it’s important to provide the full testing certification onto the supply chain. Giving this information in full ensures that they can best mitigate risks and follow the correct safety and handling procedures at every stage.

Do you need specialist training when it comes to shipping products that contain lithium batteries?

You don’t, because we do. That’s why you work with such an experienced team of professionals after all, right?! What you do need to be aware of, however, is best practice for packing these goods in line with the dangerous good regulations. Make sure of packing materials that will prevent movement in transit, and avoid packing near any conductive materials or components such as metal. If you put too many products in a containment package, you increase the risk of combustion. The majority of the rules that you will need to be familiar with were bought in by the IATA (International Air Transport Association) back in 2009. Whilst other methods of transport might have different requirements, by following these stricter rules, you will reduce the number of incidents of lithium batteries igniting and causing fires on aircrafts and other carriers.
