In the 1400s, whilst grappling with the bubonic plague, the Venetians had the brilliant idea of isolating incoming vessels on smaller islets for 40 days or, in Italian, “quarante”. By preventing boats and their sailors from immediately entering the island city and spreading further disease, these 40 days allowed for cargo to be disinfected, removed of any pests and for sailors to be declared fit and well.
Bet they were pleased when they finally got a bridge.
